There’s nothing like seeing a person gain the self-confidence and courage to be who they really are. Sometimes, it takes a big change like leaving your family home or your hometown to feel free enough to express who we always were deep inside. TikTokers are sharing their impressive personal transformations after they left their conservative households or towns, and the jaw-dropping results are inspiring others to reveal their own stories of change.
The person who popularized this latest trend is a 19-year-old TikTok user from Utah, Cherryemojigirl, whose ‘glow-up’ is very radical: the difference is like night and day. Scroll down to see some of the very best TikToker ‘glow-ups’ and let us know which ones left the biggest impression on you and why.
Bored Panda reached out to 24-year-old teacher and writer Jay Burleigh (aka jaybaebae96) who shared her glow-up video after coming out to her family and friends as queer. According to her, this was a huge turning point in embracing her identity. “I was terrified for so long of the judgment I’d face and the relationships I’d do but I finally decided that I needed to prioritize myself and accept who I am,” she said. Read on for the rest of our interview with Jay.
TikTok user Cherryemojigirl started a viral trend
She shared how she felt pressured to dress and look a certain way while living at home
However, when she moved out, she completely transformed herself
Cherryemojigirl’s viral TikTok video got a massive amount of attention on the video-sharing platform: it got over 10.1 million views, 2.7 million likes, and 10.6k comments.
And, of course, the video got others sharing their similar stories about completely overhauling their appearance after moving out.
According to Cherryemojigirl, she wasn’t allowed to express herself through her appearance because she grew up in a conservative household. Her main issue was that how she looked in middle and high school didn’t represent the ‘real’ her; she felt pressured by her family, peers, and society to look a certain way.
After graduating, the TikToker felt that she was finally free to dress and look how she wanted to. She changed her hair, got piercings and tattoos, and got new vibrant clothes to fit her new sense of style. She barely resembles who she was just a few short years ago.
What do you think about Cherryemojigirl’s new look, dear Pandas? Which particular change stood out the most for you? Do you have any stories about your own personal transformations? Share your thoughts and opinions with all the other Pandas in the comments.
One of the people who shared their glow-up videos, Jay Burleigh, told Bored Panda about coming out as queer to her loved ones
Since coming out, Jay embraced and explored her gender fluidity. “I’d been so used to such strict expectations of what made a person a woman and what made them a man so anything in between wasn’t seen as ‘girly’ or ‘manly.’ I had to release those ideas and restructure my ideas of what made me feel more feminine and what made me feel more masculine and what just let me float in between. With this, I really learned to love myself for every piece of me.”
Jay shared some advice for anyone who’s feeling pressured by their family and friends to look and act a certain way. “It doesn’t matter how hard you try, you’ll never please everyone, but by embracing yourself the self-love you feel will overcome the judgment around you,” she said.
“Be okay with the idea that people will leave your life, learn from the lesson they left, and be bravely and beautifully you despite the hate that lives around us. It’s a long and hard journey but it’s well worth the climb,” Jay gave some motivational advice for anyone and everyone who might be struggling right now.
Inspired by the trend, other TikTok users shared their own glow-up stories and showed how much they changed

Last Sunday, after protesters in Bristol, England decided to tear down the already defaced statue of a well-known slave trader, Edward Colston, and throw it into the harbor, a heated debate was sparked. While many people cheered as the statue of a man who, back in the day, was responsible for transporting about 100,000 slaves from Africa to the Americas was toppled and drowned, others had conflicting opinions. Some described the act as the erasure of history that is important to remember, while others condemned the protesters for the illegal actions they took part in.
The statue caused a bit of splash both literally and figuratively, as opinions both from political leaders and regular people started flowing. Clearly, some common ground needs to be found to resolve the matter.
As it turns out, there’s a rather simple solution to end the controversy surrounding the toppling of the statue and it comes from the prominent street artist Banksy, who often uses his art to share commentary on politics and social issues. His pitch is rather simple: bring back the statue, put it back on its pedestal, but upgrade it with statues of protesters armed with ropes in the action of taking down the slave trader’s statue. According to the artist, this would be the best way to have this “famous day commemorated.”

The coronavirus has changed a lot of things for Hannah Heil and her family. She and her husband have never worked more than a day or two from home, let alone at the same time. However, the pandemic has forced them to pack up the desks they each have worked at for over a decade, and relocate them to the small hobby farm where they live and the Internet isn’t always the best. Naturally, the couple were worried whether or not they would be able to perform their jobs properly. They also love spending time with their close friends so being unable to meet them has been difficult as well.
But Hannah has found the perfect way to cope with all of these challenges. She has been doing funny hairdos on their dog, Hank, and the Newfoundland happily lets his owner play with his hair. Hannah created an Instagram account to document these little experiments and said she’ll continue them until we all can return to our everyday lives.
“Something that helped with this stress was Hank,” Hannah told Bored Panda. “Whenever we needed a break or something seemed to go wrong, we could go sit down with him for a few minutes. Hank has this wild hair that we believe portrays his mood, plus it’s fun to play with. While taking these ‘Hank breaks’, we started giving him hairstyles to make each other laugh. We figured if it could lift our spirits, maybe it could lift our friends’ and families’ as well. We started posting whatever we could come up with in the morning before work.”
Before they were quarantined, the couple had a big family reunion scheduled to celebrate what would have been Hannah’s late-grandmother’s 100th birthday this month. Unfortunately, it had to be canceled, but Hank and his hairstyles have helped them all to have some fun and stay connected. “Gammy loved animals, and I think she probably would have enjoyed these pictures also,” Hannah said.

Day 6. (Back To The Stone Age. Stay In Your Cave!)
Conservative_And_Proud8 hours agoWow childhood flashback right there! That’s the Kenner Bull Rex from “The Lost World” Jurassic Park! I grew up on those movies!
The best part is that Hank enjoys it as well, and has been a very good model to work with! “Hank is a classic example of the Newfoundland breed; patient, loving, and loyal. He is also the most photogenic dog we have owned, and I think he loves all the attention he gets while both of us are home,” Hannah added. “Self-isolation has been fantastic to Hank, he gets 24/7 mom and dad time! Not much can bother Hank. As long as he gets kisses and a Kong chew toy after, it’s his perfect day.”
You’ve seen penguins roaming around the empty aquarium. Now get ready for… more animals! At the moment, pretty much every company and organization has closed down due to the quarantine and zoos, together with aquariums, are no exception. While the facilities might not be open to the public, their caretakers still take time to share bits and pieces of the animals’ daily lives on social media, putting a smile on our faces.
One of the most fun activities for people to watch, as it appears, is the meet-ups of animals that live in the zoo territory. Just recently, one such adorable meet-up of a sea lion and a tegu went viral. The natural and adorable confusion seen on the sea puppy’s face was enough for the video to be shared over 16k times. Therefore, we, the people at Bored Panda, decided to look for more of this kind of footage and share it with you. So scroll down below to see the cuteness we found and get ready for your heart to melt!
The video became extremely popular online after one illustrator shared it on his Twitter. “Pray for the zoo animals in this time of crisis,” he wrote in his now-viral tweet. “I mean, they’re getting really well taken care of, but they’re also living through an era of zookeepers saying, ‘Y’know what? F**k it, let’s just show them each other!’”
“When you got no game at the ‘staring game’ but your animal enrichment is on point,” Mystic Aquarium, that’s based in Mystic, Connecticut, writes in its tweet caption.
Apparently, other zoos are letting their animals see each other during the lockdown as well
“Red river hog Sir Francis Bacon got the rare opportunity to visit other Zoo residents earlier today,” Cincinnati Zoo shares. “His care team took advantage of the Zoo being closed and took him on an extended walk in the Africa habitat. The meerkats were particularly curious about the unusual visitor.”
“Our Indian runner duck stopped by the Penguin Education Center this week”
San Diego Zoo was also among the ones to show different animal species interacting with each other. This Californian zoo took a “coati cutie” to meet a gorilla, who really seemed to be interested in the little animal.
Shedd Aquarium—an aquarium located in Chicago, Illinois—captured and shared an adorable video of a Magellanic penguin, Monte, exploring the aquarium and inspecting his penguin friends in the water.
The zoos are hoping to offer people some much-needed relaxation from being bombarded by news on the coronavirus
Many zoos and aquariums are now offering people the chance to tune in to their live streams, as well
“The main thing is, we want to not lose contact with the incredible base we’ve got, nearly 30,000 family members here in Dallas,” Gregg Hudson, the Dallas Zoo’s president and chief executive, told New York Times. “We know there’s probably a lot of families at home, and we hope to offer a respite from other news that’s bombarding people.” Since the lockdown due to coronavirus, the Dallas Zoo has begun sharing behind-the-scenes footage and educational videos on Twitter, using the hashtag #BringTheZooToYou, hoping to distract people for a while from the ongoing crisis.
But Dallas Zoo is not the only one offering a sneak peek at animals’ daily routines and cute meetups. If you’re feeling a bit blue lately, tune in to the animal live streams that some zoos are offering. One of these is Cincinnati Zoo, while Shedd Aquarium is also sharing soothing live streams from underwater. Tropical Reef Aquarium in Long Beach California also offers a chance to relax while looking at the colorful fish swimming among coral and on the official webpage of Kansas City Zoo, you can choose from a variety of cameras from which to watch the animals!
Every person has a favorite activity, like taking romantic walks along the beach, hiking or picking up rocks, painting eerily realistic human eyes on them and then returning them to the landscape – you know, just regular stuff.
We don’t know about the first two, but we’re pretty sure that Australian artist Jennifer Allnutt is particularly fond of the latter activity. The artist says she started the project after visiting Queenstown, Tasmania, a place with an extensive mining history. Jennifer noticed there were many unusual rocks everywhere and started painting eyes on some of them. And what initially started as a personal project, eventually grew into a community art project and treasure hunt. Imagine finding that in the middle of the forest on your next hiking trip!
