With all the interior design fails and questionable structural inspections that we’ve covered during the years, I say it’s time we balance them out a little bit.

So let’s take a look at the Twitter account ‘Aesthetic Designs’, a fun little online project that collects pictures from all over the internet to show the pretty side of architecture and interior design. How Did a Home Design Game Soar to the Top of the App Store?

Move over, Pinterest, design lovers (apparently) have a new favorite app: Design Home, the interactive game that challenges its users to design interiors for a variety of scenarios, from island bungalows and Scandinavian retreats to quaint suburban living and English castles. The app is less than a year old and yet already boasts more than 25.5 million downloads. Today, it reached a new milestone: one million daily users.
To be honest, I was skeptical when I first heard about the game. How could an app on a smartphone screen the size of my hand translate the design experience into a game that has achieved a massive following? Nevertheless, I hit “download,” determined to find out what the hype was about. And I’ll admit: I was hooked.

The app marries the best part about playing the Sims, which was undeniably getting to design dream homes, with real pieces from the trade (no tacky, outdated furniture here). While Pinterest allows budding designers to create mood boards and pin their prospective items all in one place, Design Home takes the fun a step further by inviting users to design interiors for a variety of scenarios using 3D renderings of real pieces created by featured designers and retailers like Design Within Reach, Serena & Lily, Cynthia Rowley, Apt 2B, and more.

Design Home provides the room’s backdrop and predetermined furniture and decor placement, but it’s your job to create a cohesive color and material palette to fit the vibe, before inviting other users to vote on your work. The only downside is that, much like the real world, the inventory isn’t a free-for-all; rather, users must earn money from their designs if they want to incorporate the most exquisite pieces into their repertoire. It may take 1,642 in-app points to buy that Madera Home Curly Fur Ottoman, but it’ll certainly be worth it.
