Australian artist Jasper St Aubyn West, better known as Tail Jar on his social media accounts, has found a peculiar way of making ordinary, everyday situations into something magical. He makes illustrations of monsters perfectly blended into everyday life. His monsters give more emotion to simple things with color and a touch of humor.
West has been painting, drawing, and creating since he was a child. That has always inspired him. “I work in film and TV as an art director, animator, and motion designer. I’ve always drawn and painted, from the time I could hold a brush… making things, telling stories, and being creative has always been my happy place,” says West to Bored Panda.
Growing up in a rural area, West had to be creative as they didn’t have common facilities or TV. “I grew up in rural Australia, out in the bush. We didn’t have electricity or TV reception where we lived so we had to make our own fun/entertain ourselves—being creative was kind of a necessity! I fell in love with cinema after a trip to the movies as a kid, when visiting my grandparents, and have been completely obsessed with visual storytelling ever since.”
“That combined with a love for underground comics and photography led to the kind of work I’ve been doing lately. I wanted to find a way to make my photography more fun/interesting so I started introducing the cartoon characters and it kind of took off from there. These days, I see monsters/characters everywhere and can’t help but draw on things… it’s a bit of an obsession.”
