Every designer knows that a successful design scheme involves the layering and mixing of furnishings and accessories, usually from a variety of sources and at a range of price points. Since every item in a home’s design probably won’t be an investment piece, we asked top designers to share with us the primary areas where clients should focus. From antiques to statement lighting, see what pieces the experts thought were most important to invest in.
“We encourage clients to invest in antiques whenever possible. This can be something as simple as a piece of art or side table or a larger item such as a desk or console. Antiques are easily accessible today and help add a sense of history and warmth to any space. Antiques are the items that help to create an interior unlike any other.”

“A well chosen carpet can both ground and lift the whole environment. A high quality carpet will get better with time, embrace the life lived on it, and last for many generations. By owning a beautiful, quality carpet, you are investing in and supporting art and craftsmanship in a way that can be enjoyed every day.”

3. A Statement Piece
“Every interior should have a few special pieces that are collector’s items. These pieces need to be placed somewhere bold and brave, and I think entrance halls are the right space to set the tone. In the project above, we used a number of statement pieces, but my favourite is the iconic console table by Herve Van Der Straeten, which we paired with the fabulous mirror by Tom Palmer through London Connoisseur.”
