Rachel Brosnahan Keeps Her Golden Globe on Top of Her Toilet, for Lack of Shelf Space

Though Rachel Brosnahan is now a Golden Globe–winning actress for her role as Miriam Maisel in Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, she still suffers from small-space problems. In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the talk-show host revealed the unorthodox location where the 27-year-old keeps her award.

Fallon pulled out a picture of the gold award sitting on top of the tank of her toilet, and Brosnahan had a lot of explaining to do. “We live in New York, there is no such thing as extra storage space. It doesn’t exist,” she says desperately. “This was the only available shelf in my house.” Fallon reasons with the actress that to put a Golden Globe on the floor would simply be rude (and who are we to say that any of her pre-curated shelves should have been reorganized?). So, Brosnahan made a tactical trap for all of her future houseguests. She said, “You should not use [the award] as a doorstop, that’s very very disrespectful. But this way you get to intimidate people when they’re at their most vulnerable.”

Brosnahan won the award for best actress in a comedy or musical TV series in January 2018 and recalls “blacking out” when she heard her name called by Carol Burnett. In her acceptance speech, the actress indicated how nervous she was by shouting out Oprah, who was sitting front row-center, mid-speech. She composed herself, however, to deliver a strong message about female representation on television. She said in the speech, “This is a story about a bold and brilliant and complicated woman and I am endlessly proud to be a part of it, but there are so many women’s stories out there that still need and deserve to be told.”

Some celebrities choose to create entire shelving units—or even separate rooms—dedicated to their many accolades. At least one other celebrity has chosen to store their prized awards in the bathroom, though. J. K. Simmons told Architectural Digest that he’s created a similar display to Brosnahan’s. “Right now there is an embarrassingly large collection of them that are sitting on top of our mini-fridge in our bathroom.” Maybe Brosnahan should invest in a bathroom fridge.
