Paint companies have started announcing their color trend reports and famous color of the year forecasts for the upcoming year. So far, three brands, PPG Paints, Glidden, and Olympic, have chosen to bring back the original neutral with three different shades of black, while Behr chose to go a different direction with a warming blue-green hue.
In mid-June, PPG Paints launched Black Flame, a lighter black with tones of indigo. The color was unanimously chosen by 20 color experts from around the world to hopefully become the “new neutral.”
Olympic Paint unveiled its 2018 Color of the Year, Black Magic, at the same time. Explained as an “often misunderstood neutral,” this shade of black aims to contradict the soft grays and blush pinks trending in 2017.
“According to a common design rule, every space should incorporate black in some way,” said Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager, in a press release. “Black Magic can easily make a statement in any home on a front door, window trim, kitchen cabinets, exposed shelving, or even sliding barn doors. It works especially beautifully in a dining room with a bold light fixture.”
Along with PPG’s and Olympic’s announcement, the Glidden brandalso released its color of the year, which also happens to be another shade of black. Deep Onyx encourages a “less is more” approach to home décor and reflects a minimalist style.
“The sense of ease and authenticity it brings to a home can’t be denied,” said Misty Yeomans, PPG color marketing manager, in a press release. “Just like a little black dress, Deep Onyx is a classic, timeless staple.”
In more recent news, paint company Behr announced
Its first-ever color of the year, along with its annual color trends palette, in New York City this week. In the Moment is a blue-green hue that accents society’s desire to disconnect and creates “a serene backdrop to unwind and recharge.”
An immersive Pop-Up Trend Home in Grand Central Station gave a true sensory experience of Behr’s color trends to commuters on Aug. 9. With a virtual reality color video and the opportunity to talk to Behr color experts, the rooms within the “home” let people experience the colors.
“We know color and design decisions can be overwhelming. That’s why we’re celebrating the release of our 2018 Color of the Year with a completely different approach,” said Jodi Allen, Behr chief marketing officer, in a press release. “We’re introducing this unique color experience to New Yorkers mid-commute to show how the intentional use of fresh, tranquil color in the home can serve as an antidote to a stressful day and turn any space into your personal sanctuary.”
